DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide the participants with advanced and effective manual techniques for the extremities of canines. Manual therapy techniques will include joint mobilization, myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, and specific manual release techniques. Through my 25 years of practice, there are many techniques that have been honed and utilized daily to get immediate results for our patients. These techniques are incorporated in this presentation. There will be lecture, demonstration, and guided hands-on lab practice that will allow the practitioner to gain efficiency in treating joint, fascial, and soft tissue restrictions of the forelimb and hindlimb.
Learning Objectives
- Participant will gain basic knowledge of the principles of joint mobilization for evaluation and treatment purposes
- Participant will learn safety precautions, and indications and contraindications of joint mobilization and soft tissue manual techniques
- Participant will gain knowledge of joint biomechanics of all joint types
- Participant will have hands-on application of joint mobilization, myofascial release, and soft tissue mobilization techniques for a variety of diagnoses
- Participant will learn specific manual techniques that will provide them with immediate use within their practice
- Understanding of common areas of muscular restriction, and joint hyper/hypomobility that can be associated with common injuries
- Understanding and proper execution of advanced manual techniques to effectively treat objective findings associated with soft tissue injuries
Course Outline
Lecture
- Intro to joint mobilization, myofascial release and soft tissue mob. principles
- Indications, contraindications and safety
- Quick review of anatomy of Thoracic and Pelvic limb
- Review joint arthrokinematics and soft tissue properties
- Evaluation/Assessment of the thoracic and pelvic limb
- Specific joint mobilization techniques of the forelimb and hindlimb
- Forelimb/hindlimb indications and contraindications
Lab
- Assessment of normal joint range of forelimb and hindlimb
- Review of assessment/evaluation to identify soft tissue and joint restrictions
- Demonstration and practice of boney landmarks, proper hand placement, soft tissue mobilization and myofascial techniques
- Advanced Manual Techniques demonstrated and practiced
- Identify joint hypo/hypermobility
- Practice hands-on techniques and direct application of joint mobs to the forelimb
Lecture
- Specific joint mobilization techniques of the hindlimb
- Hindlimb indications and contraindications
Lab
- Practice hands-on techniques and direct application of joint mobs to the hindlimb
- Demonstrate soft tissue palpation of hip, shoulder, identify joint hypo/hypermobility

Ria Acciani, MPT, CCRP, IADN cert.
Ria Acciani received her Masters in Physical Therapy degree from University of St.Augustine, Florida. She has over 25 years of experience in both human and Canine Physical Therapy. She received her CCRP from UTN and was the first Physical Therapist, along with her husband, in New Jersey to practice on dogs.
Ria owns and operates the Advanced Canine Rehabilitation Center, a practice that focuses on orthopedic and sports rehabilitation and specializes in performance and sporting dogs. She travels extensively to national and international dog competitions and works with top level competitors. She is the OLicial Therapist for the AKC US World Team, IFCS US Agility Team, WAO US Agility Team, and has travelled with these teams since 2010.
Ria conducts instructional seminars on a variety of topics for dog handlers and educates them on how to prevent injury and enhance performance within their sport. Ria worked closely with Dr. Sherman Canapp and VOSM to establish the rehabilitation protocol for various shoulder elbow and pelvic limb conditions. She has published works in Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Clinics of North America, and articles in Clean Run. She has presented at STAAR (since 2010), IAVRPT, ARSIG/APTA, and SCIVAC. She is a former Board Member for ARSIG/APTA and a member of AARV.
When not working Ria is active with swimming, pilates and yoga. She loves to spend time with her 3 Border Collies, hiking and playing. Ria and David have 3 children, 2 in college and a junior in high school, and all 3 are very active in sports.
